Alfred Soulek (1909-1994) was born in Vienna as the son of the well-known wood craftsman Ernest Soulek, who collaborated closely with Wiener Moderne. He initially attended Franz Cizek's youth art class at the Academy of Applied Art, then from 1924 to 1928 he completed a carpenter's apprenticeship in his father's factory. From 1926 to 1929 he studied with Josef Hoffmann and later at the Academy of Fine Arts with Holzmeister, in whose office he worked on the project of Kemal Atatürk's Palace (Ankara, Turkey). Soulek worked in several studios, taught from 1935 to 1941 and from 1958 to 1979 at the Academy, and from 1956 also at the Academy of Fine Arts. His architectural work mainly includes residential buildings, but he also designed numerous branches of the Länderbank and shops.
