Carla Sozzani Biography
Carla Sozzani (1947 - ) is an Italian book and magazine editor, gallery owner and entrepreneur. She founded the Carla Sozzani Gallery in 1989 and is the creator of the 10 Corso Como art/fashion establishment in Milan. Sozzani was born in Mantua in 1947. She graduated in Economics from Bocconi University in Milan. While attending university in the late 1960s and early 1970s, she began working as an editor for several Italian fashion magazines. During the following decade, Sozzani was editor-in-chief of all special issues of Vogue Italia working with photographers and artists Sarah Moon, Herb Ritts, Bruce Weber, Paolo Roversi, Robert Mapplethorpe, William Wegman and Deborah Turbeville. In 1986, Sozzani left Vogue Italia and was appointed editor-at-large of American Vogue for Italy by Alexander Liberman. In 1987 Sozzani launched and directed the Italian edition of Elle. In 1990 he founded the Carla Sozzani Gallery in Corso Como 10 in Milan. The gallery focused primarily on photography and published exhibition catalogs and books on the work of Walter Albini, Pierre Cardin, Rudi Gernreich, Paco Rabanne and many photographers. He subsequently curated more than 250 photography and design exhibitions, showcasing the works of artists including Man Ray, Horst, Annie Leibovitz, Helmut Newton, David La Chapelle, Jean Prouvè, Marc Newson, Shiro Kuramata, Loretta Lux and Robert Polidori . In 2002 he opened 10 Corso Como Comme des Garçons in Tokyo, then two 10 Corso Como concept stores in Seoul. In 2017 he founded the Sozzani Foundation, committing to promoting the quality and aesthetic depth of contemporary life through broadening knowledge of the history, performance, use and presentation of the applied arts.
