Klaus Staeck Biography

Klaus Staeck, born in 1938 in Pulsnitz, a city in the north-east of Dresden, emigrated to communist East Germany in 1956. Here he independently learned to create graphic art and from the 1970s began to produce posters imitating the iconography and the language of the political campaigns of the time. His main objective was to denounce leaders who promoted reforms in favor of the rich and powerful. A frequent theme in his works is represented by vehicles, which in his art become a symbol of these policies. A peculiarity of the artist is his refusal to sign his works since the early years of his career. Klaus has in fact always believed that it was more important to make people reflect on the main themes of his works rather than identifying their creator. In a 1977 interview he himself stated: "I have developed a technique that can be used to reach many people who are not interested in politics, but who are nevertheless sensitive to inequalities, injustices and social problems." His artistic longevity is a testament to the effectiveness and popularity of the fruits of his labor. Indeed, even today, at the age of 83, Staeck produces works that challenge strong powers and raise awareness of the climate crisis.
