Dennis Stock Biography

Stock Dennis (New York, 1928 - Florida, 2010) Dennis Stock was an American photographer. He became an apprentice to photographer Gjon Mili of "Life" magazine, gifted with great graphic sensitivity and a strong interest in experimenting with light and movement. Four years later he won the “Life” competition for young photographers, thanks to an image depicting the arrival of East German refugees at the port of New York. In 1951 he became a partner of the Magnum agency, where he created a symbolic image of James Dean, linked to Youth Without a Cause, in which he depicted the actor in an intimate and melancholy attitude with a cigarette in his mouth. This photo appeared for the first time in “Life” in 1955, the year in which the actor died in a car accident. All his reports from the film sets were collected in the 2005 volume, entitled “James Dean: Fifty Years Ago”. From 1957 to 1960 he took many photos of jazz artists such as Louis Armstong, Billie Holiday, Sidney Bechet, Gene Krupa and Duke Ellington. Subsequently his photographs were exhibited in many museums and magazines. In the 1980s and 1990s he concentrated on color photographs depicting nature and landscapes. He returned to urban landscapes in the 1990s, focusing on architecture and modernism.
