Justus Sustermans Biography
Sustermans Justus (Antwerp 1597-Florence 1681) He studied in Antwerp with W. de Vos and in Paris (1617-19) with F. Pourbus the Younger. In Florence (from 1620) due to the admiration aroused by the portrait of the tapestry maker Pietro Fevère (Florence, Palatine Gallery) he became a court portraitist; he also carried out important tasks at other courts (Mantua 1621; Vienna 1623; Rome 1627 and 1645; Modena 1649-56, etc.). The courtly portraiture, enriched with precious details, taken from Pourbus, was renewed by S. first in contact with the Florentines (C. Allori, Passignano), then in a decidedly baroque sense, under the influence of Rubens, of whom he was a friend, of A . van Dyck and Pietro da Cortona (Francesco and Mattias de' Medici, 1631-32, Florence, Galleria Palatina; Vittoria della Rovere and Ferdinando II, circa 1660, London, National Gallery).
