Istvan Szabo (1938 - ) has emerged as one of the most important Hungarian directors of the 20th century. The Central European experience, from the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the Warsaw Pact, is the key to the content of his films as well as their symbolic structure. Of Jewish origin, Szabó debuted with the short films A Hetedik napon (1959) and Plakátragasztó (1960), but his first film of some importance was The Age of Illusions (1964). Szabó established himself internationally only at the beginning of the 1980s, with Mephisto (1981) which won the Oscar for best foreign film. Szabó has also been nominated several times for awards at the main European film events such as the Cannes Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival and the Venice International Film Festival. His output perhaps reached its peak in 1999 with the epic "Sunshine," which followed the rise and fall of a Hungarian Jewish family from the late 19th century to the mid-1960s.
