Yves Tanguy (Paris 1900 - Woodbury, Connecticut 1955). American painter of French origins. He was attracted to painting (1924) driven by his enthusiasm for the work of G. De Chirico, which influenced his first experiences. Through the friendship of J. Prevert he came into contact with the group of surrealists, within which he developed his own world of pure imagination, expressed with constant thematic figuration: desolate landscapes, illuminated by sidereal lights, like ambiguous visions of a dead universe or in its very early stages of life. In 1939 Tanguy moved to the USA, where he developed a more allusive and at the same time more obsessive style of painting in the precision of the sign and in the rendering of the realistic, almost photographic image (Indefinite Divisibility, 1942, Buffalo, Albright Art Gallery). After informal experiences (1946), he committed himself to large compositions (Multiplication of the strings, 1954, New York, Museum of Modern Art).
