George Tatge Biography

George Tatge is an American photographer and writer born in Istanbul in 1951 to an Italian mother and an American father. Raised between Europe and the Middle East, he graduated in English literature before starting to study photography with the Hungarian Michael Simon. After living in Rome as a journalist, he moved to Todi where he spent twelve years, writing for Art Forum and continuing his photographic research. His first exhibition in Italy was at the Galleria Il Diaframma in Milan in 1973.
Tatge has presented exhibitions in America and Europe and has been included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the George Eastman House in Rochester, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Center Canadien d'Architecture in Montreal, the Helmut Gernsheim Collection in Mannheim and the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris. He worked as a technical-photographic manager at Fratelli Alinari in Florence from 1986 to 2003 and in 2015 he was included in the exhibition on Italy at Palazzo della Ragione in Milan entitled “Henri Cartier-Bresson and the others”.
In 2015, Tatge's “Italia metafisica” exhibition opened in Florence before touring Italy. The catalogue, published by Contrasto, won an IPA award from the Lucie Foundation of NY in 2015 and the 2016 Ernest Hemingway Award from Lignano Sabbiadoro. In 2019, he presented two large solo exhibitions: “Luci di Livorno” at the Museum of the City of Livorno and “Il Colore del Caso” at Palazzo Fabroni in Pistoia.
Tatge's photographs are mainly taken with a 13x18cm Deardorff view camera. He currently lives in Florence.
