David Teniers, nicknamed the Elder, was born in Antwerp in 1582. He was a Flemish artist of great importance within a dynasty of painters, as he was the father of David Teniers the Younger and the grandfather of David Teniers III. In addition to painting, Teniers also worked as an art dealer and in 1635 participated in the Saint-Germain fair in Paris, presenting many paintings of himself and his four children. Teniers studied with Rubens in Antwerp and collaborated with the German artist Adam Elsheimer in Rome. In 1606 he joined the Antwerp painters' guild. Although he worked on sacred, mythological and historical compositions, his notoriety is mainly linked to his representations of Antwerp landscapes, scenes of fairness and jubilation, characterized by a touch of humour. David Teniers died on 29 July 1649 in Antwerp.
