Charles Henry Tenré was born on 14 October 1854 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Unfortunately, we know very little about his early life as no records exist. However, he was a French painter who created landscapes and genre scenes during the Belle époque period. His paintings reveal a close familiarity with comfortable bourgeois interiors, suggesting a direct knowledge of these kinds of environments. Tenré's artistic education was mainly based on the study of Gallo-Roman antiquities present at the Musée des Antiquités Nationales. In the early 1880s, Tenré moved to Paris to study at the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1883, Tenré exhibited his paintings for the first time at the Société des artistes français, at the age of nineteen. It appears that it was around this time that he began signing himself "Henry" Tenré rather than his full name. Many of his paintings are small in format, suggesting that they were intended for the middle-class art market. Charles Henry Tenré died in Paris on 29 January 1926.
