Carlo Terzolo Biography

Carlo Terzolo was born in Incisa Scapaccino, Asti, in 1904 into a family of farmers. In the period between 1919 and 1927 he studied painting at the Accademia Albertina in Turin. In 1923 he was briefly in Siena, where he returned during the 1924-1925 academic year to receive the painting prize, consisting of a scholarship which he used for a trip through Italy. In 1925 he made his first trip to Paris, where, thanks to the introduction of Prampolini, he frequented the artistic and cultural world. In 1928 he opened a studio in via Cardinal Maurizio 30 in Turin, where he hosted Spazzapan when he arrived from Gorizia. During the years preceding the Second World War he carried out an intense exhibition activity, also participating in international exhibitions. In 1934 he was invited to his first Venice Biennale (in total he participated in five; in 1940 he held a solo exhibition). Terzolo was always present at the Rome Quadrennials and his works were exhibited abroad in the traveling exhibitions organized by the Venice Biennale. In 1950 he won the first "Città di Torino" prize at the Promoter. In 1952 he exhibited in a solo exhibition at the La Bussola gallery in Turin (presented in the catalog by Italo Cremona). This was followed by solo exhibitions in 1965 at the Galleria Del Vantaggio in Rome (with a presentation by Giovanni Arpino) and in 1971 at the gallery L'Approdo in Turin (with a presentation by Luigi Carluccio). In 1971, on the occasion of his birthday, the City of Asti dedicated a large exhibition to him at the Baptistery of San Pietro. In addition to his artistic activity, Terzolo has had a long teaching experience first at the Art School of Turin and then at the Chair of Decoration at the Albertina Academy. Terzolo died in 1975.
