Mauro Antonio Tesi was a famous painter of perspectives and architecture, as well as an engraver. Born on 15 January 1730 in Montalbano di Zocca, Tesi soon moved with his family to Bologna, where he began to learn the art of painting in the workshop of the painter Carlo Morettini. Tesi grew up artistically immersed in the cultural and artistic climate of Bologna, undergoing the influence of the Bibiena family and developing a strong classicist orientation. Thanks to the protection and support of Count Francesco Algarotti, Tesi was able to further cultivate his passion for painting, specializing in the decoration of large noble palaces and churches. Gifted with great skills and creativity, Tesi was often called upon to invent sets for various theaters, like other famous quadraturist artists of the time. He died prematurely in Bologna in 1766, aged just 36.
