Harry Ives Thompson was a famous American painter born on January 31, 1840 in West Haven, Connecticut. He is known for his masterpieces depicting rural scenes and portraits of notable figures associated with Yale University. Initially, he worked as a salesman in the family grocery store, but his passion for painting led him to pursue an artistic career. At twenty-one, in 1861, he decided to attend the lessons of Benjamin Hutchins Coe, a landscape painter from Hartford, to improve his technique. In 1864, Coe retired, and Thompson took over his drawing school in New Haven, where he taught until 1867. The artist's first public exhibition was held at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. From 1877 to 1890, Thompson regularly participated in the exhibitions of the National Academy of Design in New York. Harry Ives Thompson died in 1906 in his hometown of West Haven.
