Thomsen August Carl Vilhem (1813-1886) August Thomsen was a 19th-century Danish painter and illustrator. He attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and completed his studies in Italy in the late 1970s. His early works included genre paintings such as “At the examination desk” of 1874 and “Mother and daughter” of 1875. In 1888 the painting “Dinner in a rectory after a Bishop's visit” allowed him to win several prizes such as the Neuhausen Prize and gold medals in Monaco. Thomsen never followed modern trends coming from Paris, but maintained his historical approach, often painting literary subjects. In 1901 he became a professor at the Royal Danish Academy.
