Calia Tindaro Biography
Tindaro Calia was born in Segrate (Mi) in 1956, where he lives and carries out his artistic activity. He teaches pictorial disciplines at the Liceo Artistico of Lodi, carrying out an appreciated activity of developing the graphic and expressive sensibilities of his students. Even before being a serious and committed artist, he is a cultured, prepared and updated man who can boast a rich cultural heritage, the result of years of work, research and improvement. Tindaro first of all favors the world of truths, feelings and emotions. As an artist he tries to imprint the characteristics of his spiritual and emotional world in his pictorial works, especially in the portraits, which boast a strong poetic imprint resulting from continuous and thoughtful introspective as well as iconographic research. The painter therefore stands out totally by that crowd of pseudo-artists, attracted only by commercial success and little or not at all driven by much deeper needs of an artistic and cultural nature. To this end, Tindaro Calia does not fail to experiment on canvas with all that is and has been the wealth of his experiences both in the world of art and in other working fields, experiences which partly date back to his youthful years, when together with his painter friends, he tried to establish a conception of pictorial art that was not necessarily aligned with the fashions of the time. Thus, for Calia, the 70s were years of profound cultural research, discussions and meetings held in the studios of his young colleagues who were similar to him in thought, inclinations, initiatives and sensitivity; but they are also years of study, reading, reflections and work experiences in the most varied areas of the art world. It should be remembered, in fact, how important it was for him to have participated in the staging of theatrical performances directed by Giorgio Streheler, such as "La Tempesta" and "Nost Milan", at the "Piccolo" theater in Milan. The meeting with the great director and the continuous attendance of the staging of some of his shows, as assistant set designer, were events that left Tindaro Calia with a wealth of learning valid for the painter's artistic production today. Through that particular theatrical activity Calia not only understood the meanings and qualities of the staging, and appreciated the extraordinary ability of knowing how to recreate historical realities with a strong evocative appeal in the scenic environment, only by resorting to the use of scenographic tools, where even simple objects or particular lighting effects had their own theatrical value, but it also and above all enriched its spiritual heritage with all those emotions ranging from the sense of the fantastic, the suggestive, the mysterious and the magical to the much deeper perception of grandeur of the scenographic space, in which works full of meaning and human values are created. All these experiences had a positive impact on the artist. It is also appropriate to remember on this occasion Calia's artistic excursus through his most important exhibitions and participation in competitions which have awarded him recognitions and prizes of high artistic value. Starting from his debut way back in 1979, in which he was selected by the critic Mario De Micheli who proposed a collective exhibition at the Fondazione Corrente "Esperienza imagine", Milan, there has gradually been a crescendo of prizes and recognitions in competitions and collective exhibitions, in the years they range from 1981 to today. His first solo show took place that year at the Galleria San Fedele in Milan, following the selection of the previous collective show "San Fedele - Quadro Giovani". The gallery owner Vincenzo Palmieri, whom he met in 1987, promoted his activity in 1991, making him participate in "Contemporary Art, at the Castle of Sartirana". Exhibition activities followed in these years with invitations and various collective events, promoted by the critics Giorgio Seveso and Carlo Franza, among which the participation in the "Young Art in Lombardy" event, organized by Giorgio Seveso and Rossana Bossaglia, stands out. In 1992 he organized his own exhibition at the Airone Gallery in Messina and at the Bonaparte Gallery in Milan, while in 1996 he participated in the "figurazioni" event, image art in Lombardy, which took place at the Museo della Permanente in Milan. Carlo Franza invited him, however, in 1988 to the collective exhibition he curated at Palazzo Benvenuti in Mondonico and in the same year at Palazzo Litta in Lainate. Since 1998 his works have been permanently exhibited in the Municipal Art Gallery of Contemporary Art of Ruffano (Le) and in the Don Tonino Bello Foundation of Alessano (Le). In this same year he began his collaboration with the critic Renato Valerio and witnessed his participation in the mural painting exhibitions of "Casoli Pinta", municipality of Atri (Te). This was followed by an invitation in 1999 to participate in the creation of a mural painting in Foza on the Asiago plateau (Vi). At the same time he began his collaboration with the Armanti Gallery in Varese which offered him exhibition and promotional activities, including the inclusion of the gallery as a painter on websites. His paintings are present in public and private collections.
