Benvenuto Tisi, also known as "il Garofalo", was born around 1481 in Garofalo. He was an Italian artist of the late Renaissance belonging to the School of Ferrara. His career began at the court of the Duke of Este. The name "Garofalo" probably derives either from the painter's birthplace or from the fact that he sometimes signed his works with a drawing of a carnation. Garofalo is said to have started as an apprentice to Domenico Panetti in 1491, while he would later collaborate with Dosso Dossi. In 1495, he worked in Cremona under the guidance of Boccaccio Boccaccino, who introduced him to the Venetian chromatic style. In 1501, he moved to Bologna for two years, where he worked in the workshop of Lorenzo Costa the Elder. In 1504 Garofalo returned to Ferrara and began to collaborate with the Dossi brothers. In 1550 Garofalo became blind and died in Ferrara on 6 September 1559.
