Titanus Biography
Titanus (1904 - ) is a film company born in Naples in 1914 founded by Gustavo Lombardo. In 1951, upon the death of Gustavo Lombardo, his son Goffredo took the reins of a company that would establish itself over time as the largest and perhaps the most celebrated Italian film company. There were hundreds of films produced by Lombardo, from popular stories such as 'Chains', 'Torment' and 'I sons of nobody' by Raffaello Matarazzo to films that brought to the attention of the public new themes of greater cultural and social importance such as 'Roma 11 o'clock ' by Giuseppe De Santis. Titanus projects images of Rome from 'Poveri ma belli' in Italian cinemas. The village frescoes of the trilogy entitled 'Bread, love'. The spectators' applause marks the history of cinema with films such as Fellini's 'Il bidone', Francesco Rosi's 'I Magliari', Visconti's 'Rocco ei his brothers' (not surprisingly produced by Lombardo in the same year in which his company produced for the general public a work of pure escapism such as 'The Cuirassier' starring Rascel). Lombardo alternated young and little-known directors with professional directors. Films like 'Il posto' by Olmi, 'The girl with the suitcase' by Zurlini, 'Giorni contati' by Petri, (without forgetting 'Il camorrista' by debutant Giuseppe Tornatore, future Oscar winner with Nuovo Cinema Paradiso). In producing, Goffredo Lombardo appealed to a passion - his - no less intense nor less lucid than that which animated more expensive and spectacular productions such as 'The Four Days' of Naples by Nanni Loy, or colossal films such as 'Sodom and Gomorrah', or masterpieces unparalleled like 'The Leopard' by Luchino Visconti. LKJHGF 1985 saw the transition to the television production of dozens of dramas that the most famous Italian factory of 'moving images' continues to produce: Edera, Sandokan, Orgoglio, Sacco e Vanzetti, Wuthering Heights, Assunta Spina, La Stella della next door and Rebecca the first wife.
