Alfredo Tominz was born in Trieste on 21 May 1854 and was the son of Augusto, who was also a painter. Tominz is thought to have learned the basics of painting from his father. From the beginning, Tominz demonstrated a particular passion for equestrian themes, so much so that he was nicknamed "Tominz of horses". This led him to move to Munich to study at the Adam School, specialists in this genre of painting. From 1876, Tominz exhibited his works at the Revoltella Museum, presenting "Amazzone" and, subsequently, chivalric subjects set in ancient Rome. In 1883, he became the Conservator of the Revoltella museum, which allowed him to travel Europe in search of works of art to purchase. In 1890, he presented "Circus Maximus" at the Great Exhibition in Prague, where he received the gold medal. During World War I, Tominz and his son Augustus were interned in Gollesdorf in Austria. Tominz died in Trieste on 22 December 1936.
