Eugenio Tomiolo Biography
Eugenio Tomiolo (Venice, 18 December 1911 – Rovigo, 12 January 2003) was an Italian painter, engraver, sculptor and dialect poet. In Venice, he attended the Carmini School of Art and a restorer's studio. In 1934-35 he began following courses at the Cignaroli academy in Verona. He then had to leave the academy because he was sent to the war in Abyssinia. Upon his return, from 1937 to 1940, he settled in Rome and came into contact with the artists of the Roman School. He was recalled during World War II. During a leave he decorated the «Bragadin» chapel in Padua and, in Porto di Legnago, the apse of the chapel of the Salesian College. Both works were destroyed during bombings. In 1945 he settled in Milan where he participated in the artistic events of Corrente and taught at the School of Applied Art of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, the high school and the Brera Academy. In 1950 and 1951 he took part in the competition for the Lissone Prize, finishing second in the first year and first in the following year. The works are exhibited, together with those of the greatest painters of the time, both Italian and foreign, at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Lissone. In 1952 he took part in the competition announced by AGIP for the LOGO of Supercortemaggiore petrol, finishing in second place for the artistic value of the project. He was awarded in Merano by Mrs. Mattei. In that competition, the famous sketch of the "Six-legged Dog" wins. Also in 1952 he painted the altarpiece of the AGIP Marine Colony in Cesenatico, in the province of Forlì. In 1956 he painted the fresco entitled “La Speranza” in Arcumeggia. In 1962 he sculpted a large wooden nativity scene with around 40 statues, this work was set up at Christmas in the Church of Santa Barbara, in Metanopoli (MI). In 1967 he created two large mosaics for the fountain located in front of the entrance to the new Civil Hospital of Legnago. In 1971, edited by Marcello and Rosalba Tabanelli, a fundamental volume was published for the reading and cataloging of Tomiolo in his first forty years of engravings. (Catalogue of the Graphic Work 1930-1971, with introductory text by the critic Raffaele De Grada, published by Mercante di Stampe Editore - Milan). In 1972 Le Cabinet Des Estamps de la Biblioteque National de Paris purchased three engravings for its collection. In 1994 he created the mosaic: "The Good Samaritan" for the Luigi Accorsi retirement home in Legnago (VR). In 1997 he performed a nativity scene entitled: "The Light of Christ Jesus Illuminates Every People" for the Treasure Museum of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.
