Vito Tongiani Biography

Vito Tongiani (1940 - ) Born in Matteria, an Italian province of Fiume to Tuscan parents, he spent his youth in Rapallo. As a creative artist, Tongiani has worked and lived in Paris, Turin, Massa, Essaouira and Marrakech. For many years he has had his permanent residence in Camaiore. Tongiani has acquired international fame especially for the creation of sculptures of Italian and international personalities, as well as for the design of fountains. The most well-known and famous statues of Tongiani are certainly the monument of Giacomo Puccini in the city of Lucca in Piazza Cittadella in front of the composer's birthplace and the statues dedicated to the French tennis players known as the musketeers created for the Paris Open Roland Garros. Among his other creations: 2005: statue of Indro Montanelli in Milan, 2013: statue of Steno Marcegaglia in Gazoldo degli Ippoliti, 1986–1987: Fountain on the Place du Marché in Nîmes with the "Crocodile de Nîmes" together with Martial Raysse, 2004: Fountain "The triumph of Aphrodite" in Massa. Among the exhibitions in which he participated we remember: 1976: Participation with the “Nouvelle subjectivitè” group at the “Festival d'Automne” in Paris; 1979: Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles; 1982: Venice Biennale in the international pavilion; 1993: Participation in the exhibition “Italian Artists for Europe” in the “Musée de la Cour d'Or” in Metz; 1993: Exhibition “De Chirico and the postmetaphysical consequences” in Paris at the Artcurial auction house; 1996: Participation in the exhibition “Die Kraft der Bilder - Realismus der Gegenwart” at the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin and in 1999: Participation in the Quadrennial in Rome.
