Elio Torriero Biography

Elio Torrieri (1945 - ) is an artist, originally from Abruzzo, who grew artistically in the ferment between the Sixties and Seventies. After training in Urbino and a career in the advertising field, in 1970 he met Christian Stein and came into contact with the Turin art scene. It is the time of Arte Povera; the years during which the ecological crisis exploded internationally. The word anthropocentrism is not yet so widespread but the actions that seek to investigate the terms and characteristics of the environmental question are numerous. From American Land Art to the work of Piero Gilardi in Italy. From the artists active in central Europe (OHO group, TOK group, Ana Lupas, Teresa Murak, Imre Butka, Zorka Saglova) to Giuseppe Penone's research in Piedmont, up to the birth of the expanded concept of art, social sculpture and actions in Defense of Nature by Joseph Beuys. The language that Torrieri uses starting from that precise historical moment is a tool that translates the stimuli and suggestions of a changing world. This explains the narrative contained in the drawings, made up of suspended particles and dark colored palettes. Obvious references to a state of pollution in progress but, at the same time, places within which to imagine an "other" environment towards which to reach out.
