Catharina Treu was a German painter born on May 21, 1743 in Bamberg. Daughter of Joseph Marquard Treu, she learned the art of painting together with her brothers and sisters, developing a particular talent for 17th century still lifes. In 1762 she was selected by Prince-Bishop Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim to paint the overdoors for his residence in Würzburg, which brought her considerable success, so much so that she received a commission for the overdoors in the Schloss Bruchsal in 1766. Thanks to her fame, in 1769 she was appointed court painter for Charles Theodore, Elector of Bavaria. In the same year, she was also appointed the first female teacher at the court of Charles Theodore at Schloss Benrath in Düsseldorf. He died on 11 October 1811 in Mannheim.
