Angiolo Tricca Biography

Angiolo Tricca (Sansepolcro, 17 February 1817 – Florence, 23 March 1884) was an Italian illustrator and painter. Tricca was born in Borgo San Sepolcro, near Arezzo, in 1817. A pupil of the painter Vincenzo Chialli, in 1837 he moved to Florence to attend the Academy of Fine Arts. Particularly skilled in drawing, even more than in painting, he immediately obtained numerous commissions: in particular copying works of the great masters which will then be used for printed publications of the time. Both in 1844 and 1850 he attempted to obtain the chair of drawing at the Academy of Florence, but without success. In 1845 he enrolled in the Florentine Promotion Society, continuing his activity as a designer. In 1848 he took part in the first war of independence. Starting from 1849 he began to collaborate on various satirical newspapers with anonymous cartoons and caricatures and became a regular visitor to the Caffè Michelangiolo. Also in these years he began to be interested in photography and chromolithography, but he did not abandon his activity as a "copier" of works of art, indeed thanks to this ability he was able to collaborate with various art dealers and also try his hand at in restorations (such as that of Raphael's Portrait of the Duke of Nemours). In 1875 he transformed his painter's studio into an antiques shop. But, paradoxically, it is precisely from this event that he will create his most important paintings and begin teaching painting (he will also have Federico Andreotti among his students). Tricca died in Florence in 1884, but was buried in his hometown.
