Rosemarie Trockel Biography

Trockel Rosemarie (Schwerte, 1952) Rosemarie Trockel is a contemporary German conceptual artist, whose works have questioned traditional canons of femininity, culture and artistic production. She was born in Schwerte, Germany on 13 November 1952 and studied in Cologne at the Werkkunstschule, becoming one of the first artists to exhibit at the Monika Spruth Gallery, an exhibition space where only female artists perform. Trockel's earliest works were contained in the Knitted Paintings series (1985), created using a knitting machine. Trockel paints computer-generated images or, in some cases, specific historical iconography, such as the Soviet worker with hammer and sickle. His works have been widely exhibited and in 2012 Trockel's work was included in a retrospective at the New Museum in New York, also presented the following year at the Serpentine Gallery in London. Trockel has received many awards, including the Wolf Prize in Arts in 2011.
