Paavo Tynell (1890-1973) was a prominent industrial designer, known as the great pioneer of Finnish lighting design and affectionately nicknamed "the man who lit up Finland". Tyne was one of the founders and main designer of Taito Oy, the first industrial manufacturer of lighting fixtures in Finland. With the introduction of electricity in the early 20th century, Taito Oy and Tynell contributed to the expansion of thinking and production of modern lighting solutions both in Europe and abroad. Paavo Tynell achieved fame in the 1930s and 1940s, during which time he collaborated with some of Finland's most renowned architects, most notably Alvar Aalto. Working to include artificial lighting in modern environments, Tynell's company Taito Oy produced luminaires for all of Alvar Aalto's major projects, including the Paimio Sanatorium and the Viipuri Library.
