Gunther Uecker (Wendorf, 1930) Gunther Uecker is a sculptor belonging to the optical art movement and an installation artist. He began his artistic training in 1949, when he began his studies in Wismar, subsequently attended the art school in Berlin and in 1955 arrived in Dusseldorf, where he studied under Otto Pankok. In 1961 he founded the ZERO group, in which the author wanted to bring art back to “zero degree”. Uecker was interested in oriental religions and purificatory rites, an interest that is also found in his works, in which he seeks the simplicity and purity of forms and things, as happens in Buddhism, Taoism and Islam. His works are characterized by the repetition of simple actions, as in the canvases and sculptures covered with nails, aimed at recreating light and shadow across the entire surface. Subsequently Uecker approached kinetic art, representing the German side, and then met John Cage after the dissolution of the ZERO group. The artist also approached body art and conceptual art, in which he understood the need to bring the viewer closer to the work of art, transforming him into an integral part of it. His works have been exhibited in the collections of the Buffalo Art of Chicago, at the Museum of Modern Art of the Solomon R. Guggenheim in London, in the Georges Pompidou in Paris, at the Tate Modern in London, at the Hamburger Bahnof and at Punta della Dogana at the exhibition “ Accrochage” (2016).
