Liegi Ulvi Biography

Liège Ulvi, anagram of Luigi Moisé Levi was born on 11 October 1859 in Livorno and was a well-known Italian painter of the 19th and 20th centuries. He moved to Florence in 1880 to attend the Academy of Fine Arts. Subsequently, he continued his artistic training in Paris and London, where he exhibited at the I Italian Exhibition of 1888 and the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1889. After a period spent in Florence, Liège Ulvi returned to his hometown in 1908. From here, from 1909 to 1921, he continued to exhibit works representing glimpses of the city, urban views and landscapes. His landscapes were characterized by rapid brush strokes derived from Fattori, strong and full-bodied colors, and great attention to light. In 1921 he became the President of the "Gruppo Labronico", born the previous year to keep alive the legacy of Fattori and Mario Puccini, who had just passed away. From that year, Liège Ulvi exhibited at the Rome and Venice Biennials. In 1932, the Municipality of Livorno awarded him the gold medal for his activity as a cultural promoter. Liège Ulvi died in Livorno on 14 September 1939.
