Willem Van de Velde is a Dutch painter specialized in marine views like his father Willem van de Velde the Elder, while his brother Adriaen van de Velde specialized in landscapes and animal figures. Taught first by his father, he later trained with Simon de Vlieger, also a marine artist. From 1652 the sources place him in Amsterdam, and starting from 1672/1673, with his father, he entered the service of Charles II of England. In 1691 he lived in Westminster, where he died in 1707.
His work marks the maximum expression achieved by the Dutch naval genre during the 17th century, thanks also to his knowledge of naval techniques, mastery of drawing and of the effects of light and atmosphere. Proof of this is his paintings of naumachies and stormy skies and seas.
