Cornelis Van Polenburg Biography

Cornelis van Poelenburgh was born in Utrecht in 1586. Flemish artist, he was one of the founders of Dutch-Italian landscape painting. He began his training in the workshop of the mannerist painter Abram Bloemaert in Utrecht. From 1617 to 1625, he lived and worked in Rome where he perfected his style inspired by Raphael. Together with other Dutch artists, he founded the circle of Flemish painters in Rome, where he was nicknamed "Satyr". During his stay in Italy, he also worked in Florence for the Grand Duke of Tuscany. Returning to Holland, Poelenburgh became one of the most important artists in Utrecht, so much so that he was chosen to guide Peter Paul Rubens during his visit to the city in 1627. In 1638, at the invitation of the king, he worked in England until 1641. Among his works there are also historical paintings, but his success was achieved mainly thanks to his landscapes painted after 1620, which often depict romantic remains of ruins and fragments of statues. He was one of the first artists to know how to represent sunlight and the Italian atmosphere in painting. Cornelis van Poelenburgh died in Utrecht in 1667.
