Antonio Maria Vassallo Biography

Antonio Maria Vassallo (Genoa, around 1620 – Milan, 1664/1672) was an Italian painter. Born around 1620 in Genoa, Vassallo worked in the workshop of the Flemish Vincent Malo, through whom he was able to learn the art of Pieter Paul Rubens and David Teniers the Elder. His style was also influenced by contemporary painters specializing in still lifes and animals, including Sinibaldo Scorza and Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione; with the latter he intertwined a more in-depth knowledge based on common philosophical and antiquarian interests. Like his inspirers, Vassallo became a well-known and appreciated creator of still lifes and genre scenes. However, he was able to leave traces of his personal idea of painting, driven by the teachings of Vincent Malò but in constant dialogue with the Flemish models who found the gateway to Italy and a rich and refined clientele in Genoa. He died in Milan, where he had moved on the advice of his doctors who considered the Milanese climate more favorable to his ailing health, between 1664 and 1672. He had no children or pupils but his style influenced the art of his compatriot Giovanni Agostino Cassana.
