György Vastagh was a Hungarian genre painter and portraitist born in Szeged on 12 April 1834. In 1854 he went to Vienna to study at the Academy of Fine Arts where he was influenced by Carl Rahl and Friedrich von Amerling. During this period, Vastagh devoted himself to producing portraits and religious-themed works and participated in numerous exhibitions in Vienna. In 1876 he moved to Budapest where he opened a portrait studio catering to an aristocratic clientele, becoming court painter to Archduke Joseph Karl Ludwig for almost three decades. Furthermore, in 1883 he painted part of the ceiling fresco in the foyer of the Hungarian State Opera. He also created altarpieces in Budapest, Szeged, Arad and Temesvár. In 1894 he was one of the founders of the Hungarian Association of Artists and Patrons and shortly thereafter helped organize the National Exhibition for their exhibitions. Vastagh died in Budapest on 21 February 1922.
