Giulio Romano Vercelli Biography
Giulio Romano Vercelli, born in Marcoregno in 1871, was an Italian painter who approached art self-taught without ever attending any academy. As a young man, he embarked for Latin America, visiting Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, a destination where several private collections of his paintings are found. During his stay in Paris, he decided to personally contact Claude Monet and Paul Cézanne, both artists who would greatly influence his style. In his art, he was initially very close to Post-Impressionism and later to the painting of the Fauves, with a material and aggressive brushstroke. Giulio Romano Vercelli did not dedicate himself to a specific genre, but ranged from genre scenes, to landscape, to sacred painting and still life. In Italy, recognition came only with his participation in the Venice Biennials of 1920 and 1922. The painter died in Turin in 1951.
