Ernesto Vighi was born on 1 April 1894 in San Secondo Parmense. He began his pictorial studies at the Parma Academy of Art, where he studied sculpture and graduated in 1912. Immediately after finishing his studies, he worked on the monument dedicated to Giuseppe Verdi under the guidance of maestro Ettore Ximenes.
During the First World War, Vighi was wounded, fighting as an officer. After the war, he returned to San Secondo Parmense where he resumed sculpting clay, inspired by his memories of the trenches. Shortly afterwards he moved to Rome, where he continued his artistic activity. In 1924 he was appointed Professor of decorative plastic at the Royal Professional Institute of Rome. The same year he participated in the "Competition for the fountains of Rome", winning the prize of 2,000 lire for the sketch of the Piazza dei Quirini. He also participated in the international exhibition in Florence and in the Sacred Art exhibition in Rome with the bas-relief work "The Annunciation" which aroused great interest. Ernesto Vighi died in Parma on 14 October 1950.
