Giuseppe Viola (Milan 1933-2010) is a leading artist of the 1930s generation. Equipped with a receptive and brilliant temperament and a formidable talent, he interweaves two strands, two formal figures that will remain very peculiar to him: the first is that of a pictorialism of first intention, colourist, saturated with gestural brushstrokes, direct heir of the great Italian drawing and of Corrente's realism, particularly on the southern side of Cantatore, Migneco, Guttuso and the Roman School of which he remained the only artist worthy of imitation. The second figure is the imagist one, marked by the same easel subjects, but at the same time by a compositional geometry and an always dynamic image, without forgetting the clear backgrounds of saturated, almost enamelled colours. Thanks to the meeting with Dino Buzzati, in 1969 Viola transposed the principles of literary imagism into painting: visual synthesis, social symbolism of straight lines and essential features, strong chromatic impact, dry and concise message.
