Hans Vollmer Biography

Hans Vollmer was born in Charlottenburg in 1878. During his studies in landscape architecture at TU Munich, he focused on the transformations of former industrial landscapes, focusing in his master's thesis on the opportunities for reconversion and reprogramming of an abandoned aluminum smelter in 'Oregon, USA. During the years 2008 and 2009, he worked for Vogt Landscape in Zurich and London, participating in international projects such as the Tate Modern and the Athletes Village for the London 2012 Olympics. Thanks to his interdisciplinary approach in the master's program in Urban Design at HCU Hamburg, was able to combine and test its design and planning skills through ethnographic research methods. Together with his main colleague Ben Pohl, he analyzed the urban phenomena of kiosks as places of interculture, focusing his thesis on the spatial and economic practices of gastronomic actors and their places as urban centralities. He considers himself a self-builder, with a strong curiosity towards the opportunities for recycling and reusing local resources and secondary materials found in the city. His main interest in the research project concerns the transfer of practical knowledge in urban self-construction.
