Franz Seraph Von Leinbach (1836-1904) son of a builder, Lenbach was born in Schrobenhausen, Bavaria, and began working in his father's business. He trained as an artist in Munich, attending several studios, and then went to Rome, first in 1859 and then again in 1863, when he was hired to make copies of the old masters. At the end of the 1960s he settled in Munich, where he became a close friend of Chancellor Bismarck. He was much in demand as a fashionable portraitist, his subjects including Ludwig, King of Bavaria and Pope Leo XIII and he twice painted the British Prime Minister, Gladstone. Lenbach used photography to aid his work.
