Markus Willeke was born in 1971 in Recklinghausen, Germany. He currently lives and works in Berlin, where he draws inspiration from the visual manifestations of the world around him, in particular from the cinematographic repertoire. His artistic technique combines acrylic and oil paint with watercolor and spray paint, creating abstract compositions of images from newspapers and other media. Willeke reworks icons of urban reality, such as graffiti, warning signs and commercial signs, to create visionary images. His reproductive memory allows him to uncover and reinterpret the collective iconographic repertoire of society. His works have been exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions in galleries and museums in Germany and around the world.
