Li Xiangyang was born in 1953 in Shanghai.
In 1973 he enlisted in the People's Liberation Army, at the same time creating sets for the Jinan Air Force artistic troupe.
In 1985 he was transferred to Shanghai to the Party's propaganda office.
His propaganda drawings, but also watercolors and oil paintings, made him very famous among his contemporaries.
In 1996 he graduated from the College of Fine Arts of Shanghai University.
He was the executive director of the Shanghai Art Museum, as well as the Dean of the Shanghai Institute of Painting and Sculpture.
Lives and works in Beijing, China.
