Yoshitomo Nara (奈良美智 Nara Yoshitomo?; Hirosaki, 1959) is a contemporary Japanese pop art artist. He currently lives and works in Tokyo, although his work has been exhibited all over the world. Nara completed her studies at Aichi Prefecture University of Arts and Music. Between 1988 and 1993, he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, in Düsseldorf, Germany. Since 1984 the artist has had around 40 solo exhibitions. Nara's debut took place in the nineties during the Japanese pop art movement. The subjects of his works are deceptively simple: most of the works depict seemingly innocuous figures (often children and dogs drawn in pastel colors, with cartoonish strokes) with little or no background. But these children, who at first appear cute and vulnerable, sometimes brandish weapons such as knives and saws. Their eyes often have an accusatory look, as if they have just been woken up, which makes their face look hateful.
