Domenichino, pseudonym of Domenico Zampieri (Bologna, 21 October 1581 – Naples, 6 April 1641), was an Italian painter. Protagonist of Bolognese painting, he was one of the promoters of seventeenth-century European classicism. A student first of D. Calvaert and then of the Carraccis, he was an artist of the most cultured, developing the formal experiences of the great masters of the 16th century in a refined eclecticism. He worked in Rome for the decoration of Palazzo Farnese and, after an intense independent activity, in Naples, where he largely influenced local production. He composed his figurations with exemplary simplicity and clarity, modulating the tones in precious chromatic ranges. His painting influenced N. Poussin, the Lorraine and G. Dughet.
