Zapata is an artist who chooses to work through history. He recovers images from the past in his works - they are often masterpieces and architectural elements of the Renaissance - only to personify them through manipulations and interventions. Thus appropriating images of the past, Zapata always experiments with different media. The richly textured surface of his bas-reliefs, which places his works somewhere between painting and sculpture, can be composed of cardboard, rags, silica mixed with paint, plaster molds or metal sheets.
