[as n.853] Hans Zatzka was an Austrian fantasy painter, born on 8 March 1859 in Vienna and died in the same city on 17 December 1945. He was an academic and adopted many pseudonyms to sign his paintings, such as Joseph Bernard, J. Bernard and Bernard Zatzka. That's because Zatzka wanted to avoid penalties for violating contracts that limited the amount of art he could sell. Zatzka began his studies at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1877 and completed them in 1882. In the meantime, he managed to earn a living by creating frescoes for churches and other institutions. Zatzka, preferred to depict women, fairies and other fantastic scenes. He often drew inspiration from the works of Richard Wagner and the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. Over the years, many of Zatzka's paintings have been photographed and made into commercial and collectible postcards. Zatzka died in Vienna on 17 December 1945.
