Safet Zec was born in 1943 in Rogatica, Bosnia-Herzegovina. After studying at the Sarajevo School of Applied Arts and the Belgrade Academy of Fine Arts, he became an important member of the artistic movement called “Poetic Realism”. He lived and worked in Belgrade until 1989, before returning to Sarajevo in the early nineties. Due to the war in the former Yugoslavia, in 1992 he was forced to leave his country and settle in Italy. Here he reconstructed his artistic activity, working on new canvases, drawings and engravings, and in 1994 he presented his first exhibition in Italy. He exhibits in various exhibitions in Italy, Europe and the United States, with over 100 exhibitions under his belt. After the end of the conflict in the countries of the former Yugoslavia, he resumed his acquaintance with his homeland and opened the Zec Studio-Collection in Sarajevo, which has become a center of cultural initiatives and an exhibition venue for his works. Over the years, he has won numerous awards, including the “Alpe Adria” Grand Prix for Drawing in 1996 and the Chevalier de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2007.
