Fred Zinnemann Biography
Fred Zinnemann, Austrian director, was born in Vienna on 29 April 1907 and died on 14 March 1997. His film career was very successful, particularly between the 1940s and 1960s, a period in which he won numerous Oscar awards.
The first Oscar arrived in 1948, thanks to the film “Tragic Mission”, with the protagonist Montgomery Clift winning as best screenplay. In 1952, with the western "High Noon", Zinnemann managed to earn four statuettes: best leading actor, best song, soundtrack and editing. In 1954 he won the best film award for "From Here to Eternity".
Other films directed by Zinnemann include "The Nun's Story", "...and the Day of Vengeance Came" and "A Man for All Seasons", which allowed him to win his second statuette as best director. In 1977, however, with the film "Giulia", directed with Vanessa Redgrave, Jane Fonda, Maximilian Shell and Meryl Streep, he won three Oscars.
