Giuseppe Zocchi Biography
Giuseppe Zocchi, born in Florence in 1711, was a famous Italian engraver and designer of humble origins. He began working as an interior decorator in Ranieri del Pace's workshop, and then dedicated himself to art. He achieved great success thanks to the Marquis Andrea Gerini, under whose protection he was able to travel to many Italian cities and discover the landscape and contemporary society. Among his most important works, we find a series of 25 views of the city of Florence and 50 of the grand ducal villas and surrounding places, all commissioned by Andrea Gerini and published starting from 1744. His works, in Venetian landscape style, show precise details and sharp landscapes. Zocchi also created an important fresco for the decoration of the palace in Via Ricasoli, commissioned by Gerini. From 1749, he also dedicated himself to designing models for the semiprecious stone inlays made in the Opificio, with naturalistic themes, enjoying great success and important commissions, including that of the Habsburg Emperor and the King of Prussia. Zocchi also experimented with furniture inlay until 1760. He died in Florence in 1767.
