Josef Zotti Biography

Josef Zotti was born in 1882 in Borgo Valsugana and was a well-known Austrian architect who dedicated himself to the design of numerous buildings in Vienna. His commissions included both residential and commercial buildings, as well as public and industrial buildings, without neglecting interior design.
Zotti completed solid professional training in Bolzano and Merano before obtaining a scholarship that allowed him to continue his studies in Vienna. In this city, he attended the prestigious technical school for furniture and carpentry of the Technological Museum of Commerce, where he became a student of the renowned architect Josef Hoffmann at the Kunstgewerbeschule.
Initially, Zotti worked in the fields of textiles and ceramics, but later turned to designing wicker furniture which achieved great success as signature products of Prag Rudniker Korbwaren-Fabrication in Central Europe. Zotti's design was characterized by the use of turned panels and furniture, elements that are evident within his creations.
His interest in the research of chemist Wilhelm Ostwald in the field of color standardization for industry became a springboard for his teaching career throughout Austria. It was precisely thanks to these skills that Zotti managed to establish himself in the teaching field.
Towards the end of the 1930s, Zotti decided to largely retire from professional activities and spent the last years of his life in Vienna, where he died at the age of 71.
