Guido Zuccaro Biography

Guido Zuccaro (Udine, 1876 – Bassano del Grappa, 1944) was an Italian painter. Grandson of the painter Antonio Zuccaro, he arrived with his family in Milan and entered the stained glass workshop run by Pompeo Bertini at a very young age. During the last decade of the century he spent a long time in the classrooms of the Brera Academy following courses in ornamentation, figure and painting (1889-1895; in 1896 he was suddenly suspended from all schools); in the same years he made his debut primarily as a portraitist at the exhibitions of the Famiglia Artistica and Società Permanente. Firmly embarked on a career as a stained glass designer which led him to work for the Fabbrica del Duomo and the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, he approached the Milanese socialist circles, helping to illustrate the movement's print and obtaining the first important pictorial commission with the creation of the central panel of the Railwaymen's Triptych for the Milanese mutual aid headquarters of the category (1897-1898). Moving in 1901 to Giovanni Beltrami's artistic stained glass company, where he worked until 1928, he continued his portraiture activity and also dedicated himself to landscape painting, broadening the exhibition horizon of his paintings to the point of participating in some editions of the Venice Biennale ( in 1909 Autumn Morning was purchased by the Gallery of Modern Art in Milan).
