Francesco Zucchi was a renowned Italian engraver born in Venice in 1692. Most active in the northern part of Italy, he learned the principles of pictorial art from his brother Andrea Zucchi in Pordenone. During his career, Francesco was invited to Dresden to create some engraved plates based on paintings from the Gallery. Unfortunately, however, his work was abruptly interrupted due to the Seven Years' War. Despite Henry Fuseli's claims, it appears that Zucchi never visited Dresden, but instead sent his creations from his hometown of Venice. Francesco Zucchi was one of the most renowned engravers of the time and his artistic production included reproductions of paintings, views of the cities of Venice, Brescia, Bressanone and numerous illustrations for books. Among the latter, mention should be made of the Italian translation of the famous "Paradise Lost" by John Milton, published in 1742, for which he made numerous engravings. Francesco Zucchi died in Rome in 1764.
