Lot 291
Beautiful fusion depicting the fourth avatar of Vishnu, Narasimha, characterized by a human body and a lion head. The figure is accompanied by the goddess Lakshmi, consort of Vishnu, holding a closed lotus bud in her right hand. Narasimha is rendered in the four-armed variant: two hold Vishnuito attributes (the chakra wheel and the shell), one holds the consort and the last is in the gesture of protection and reassurance (abhayamudra). The Leonine manifestation of Vishnu is invoked by the faithful for protection and help in overcoming difficulties. The figure was originally complete with prabha shaped with the seven heads of the serpent Sheshanaga on whose coils sit the deities. The empty slot is visible on the back.
