ASTA 193 - FINE CHINESE, ASIAN & ISLAMIC WORKS OF ART
Lot 139
This sceptre shows the traditional "S" shape with its head shaped like a cloud. There are little clouds and flying bats carved in the head of the sceptre, the latest are symbols of long life and happiness. There is also the letter "shou" (long life). At the centre of the handle there is the letter "lù" (good luck) right in the middle of the long Manchu inscription. The handle ends with a lobed pattern decorated with two peaches and a bat hidden among the leaves, while on the back of the handle there is a long prayer with a pass from "Journey to the West" by Wu Cheng'en (ca. 600 AD). These ruyi sceptres were given to the Emperor, or other members of the royal family, as symbol of good luck. Emperor Qianlong particularly liked this kind of gifts, and he often wrote about them and also promulgated a decree concerning the objects which were donated to him.
